St. Mark's Lutheran Church, Madison, WI

Welcome To St. Mark's Lutheran Church!

St. Mark's Lutheran ChurchConnect
St. Mark's is participating with several other congregations in a renewal program through the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin, ELCA called Connect. Connect is a two year program. Congregations support each other through Bible study and reflection, helping to identify and clarify the mission of each church and provide a foundation for new ministry opportunities. St. Mark's is excited to participate in this program and to further develop their hospitality ministries. Our mission statement is, "Reaching out with the unconditional love of God" though even this may be tweaked during the coming months.

Diana Butler Bass, a noted church historian, has observed that customs are what define the way a church cuts their communion bread, or what time service is or even what kind of music is played. Tradition is knowing that we are called to Jesus' table of grace, that we gather for worship out of thanksgiving, and we are to be Christ in the world. Custom's may need to change. Tradition is what keeps us grounded. Come and join us as we honor a faith tradition more than two thousand years old but that is necessary and relevant in our changing world.

Easter 2017

Pastor Lori PowellFrom Our Pastor:
Being the Church

From the June, 2017 issue of Branches

Dear Friends:
This Sunday, June 4th we will celebrate the first Pentecost when a small following of people, mostly of Jewish descent gathered for worship and to follow the Jesus Way. They numbered around one hundred fifty people. The Spirit touched their gathering and by the end of Pentecost their numbers were near three thou-sand. The Spirit came upon the church and touched off a fire in-side each of them.

Two thousand years later we are still the church. The role of the church is not to constantly create new projects but to be a place where people can find the fire inside of them. Sometimes the Spirit leads us into new activities because of inner fires burning but at other times it is a call to spiritual renewal – finding a deeper connection with God individually and as a community of faith...

Blessings, Pastor Lori
